Machame Route
The southern-based Machame Route, also referred to as the "Whiskey-Route", is currently the most popular trail for those looking for a challenge. The route is scenically very attractive and, can be throughout, physically quite challenging, especially the parts which entail a bit of climbing as well as the ascent of the Great Barranco Wall.
To increase the chance in reaching the Peak, an optional acclimatisation day at Barranco Camp or in Karanga Valley is recommended.
The main factors which differentiate the Machame Route with the other routes is the diversity of flora and fauna as well as the walking trails. The ascent to the peak starts around midnight at Barafu Camp and follows the Rebmann Glacier up towards Stella Point. The descent follows the same route back to Barafu Camp and from there along the Mweka Route, which is only used for descending.
